April 2017

Maputo, Mozambique

In April 2017, Dr. Sara Browne, (President of SIGH) traveled to Maputo, Mozambique to visit some of the local hospitals and medical teaching facilities. Her goal during this visit was to see first-hand what resources were available to the medical specialists, and also determine what SIGH could do to support the improvement of resources.

She learned that the ability to train medical specialists in Mozambique is extremely limited. Almost all specialty training requires MDs to train abroad, mostly in Europe. These specialists then return to Maputo to work and train the next generation of medical students as best they can. There are storages of specialists across every sector of medical and surgical practice, for example there is not a single trained neurologist in Mozambique.
